Exploring Willamette Mission State Park - Gervais OR.

Our Sixth Bird Walk:

Date: August 15 2026
Location:Willamette Mission State Park, Gervais, OR

Our sixth bird-watching adventure took us to Willamette Mission State Park, a beautiful destination filled with wooded trails, wildlife, and access to the Willamette River. The park’s day-use fee was $10, and we spent nearly three hours exploring its trails, riverbank, birds, and natural surroundings.

A Helpful Recommendation from a Park Ranger

As we entered the park, we saw a park ranger and asked him for a good bird-watching spot. He suggested following the trail toward the river beach—and it turned out to be an excellent recommendation.

The walk to the river was approximately half to three-quarters of a mile. The trail took us deep into the woods beneath a thick canopy of trees and through areas surrounded by dense bushes. Some parts of the trail were darker because of the heavy tree cover, making the walk feel like a peaceful journey into the heart of nature.

Birds and Squirrels Everywhere

The forest was full of activity. We noticed squirrel families moving among the trees and across the forest floor, while birds called and flew above us.

During our visit, we were able to identify:

  • Downy Woodpecker

  • Yellow Warbler

  • Steller’s Jay

  • Western Wood-Pewee

  • Northern Flicker

  • Red-breasted Nuthatch

  • Song Sparrow

  • Cedar Waxwing

  • American Robin

  • Eurasian Collared-Dove

Each bird brought something special to the experience. Woodpeckers searched the trees, songbirds moved among the branches, and Cedar Waxwings added an especially memorable sighting to our growing bird-watching journey.

Reaching the River Beach

After walking through the deeply wooded trail, we reached the river beach. The section where we entered was covered mostly with rocks, with only a small amount of sand. There may be another part of the riverbank with a larger sandy area, and we hope to explore it during a future visit.

Even though the beach was rockier than expected, reaching the river made the walk worthwhile. It was a peaceful place to pause, observe the surroundings, and enjoy the beauty of the Willamette River.

A Wonderful Three-Hour Nature Experience

We spent nearly three hours at Willamette Mission State Park exploring the trails, watching birds and squirrels, walking along the riverbank, and enjoying time together in nature.

The park offered a wonderful combination of woodland walking, wildlife observation, and river exploration. The ranger’s suggestion helped us discover a beautiful part of the park that we might otherwise have missed.

Our sixth bird walk was another great family experience—and a reminder that sometimes the best adventures begin by simply asking a local expert which trail to take.

We look forward to returning, exploring more of the river beach, and discovering which birds will be waiting for us next time.
