Discovering New Birds at Orchard Heights Park in West Salem

Salem India Community Wellness Bird Walk #5

Date: August 2026
Location: Orchard Heights Park, West Salem, Oregon

One of the greatest joys of our Salem India Community Wellness Bird Walks is discovering parks that many of us have visited before—but experiencing them in a completely different way.

For our fifth bird walk of the season, our family visited Orchard Heights Park in West Salem. Although we had been here several years ago, we were pleasantly surprised by how much the park has changed.

Every walk teaches us something new, and this visit introduced us to new birds, familiar trails, and a few unexpected discoveries.

A Park That Has Grown

The first thing we noticed was how much Orchard Heights Park has evolved over the years.

The addition of pickleball and tennis courts has transformed part of the park into a lively recreation area. It was wonderful to see people of all ages staying active and enjoying these new amenities.

Parks like this are becoming true community spaces where people can exercise, socialize, and reconnect with nature all in one place.

A Curious Discovery

As we explored the park, one unusual object immediately caught our attention.

Near one of the trail areas was a large triangular sticky trap designed to capture flying insects such as wasps, bees, and other insects.

We weren't entirely sure of its specific purpose or what species it was intended to control, but it certainly sparked an interesting conversation. It served as a reminder that parks are carefully managed ecosystems where balancing public safety and protecting native wildlife can sometimes be challenging.

If anyone knows exactly what these traps are monitoring or controlling, we'd love to learn more.

Following the Creek into the Forest

One of the most enjoyable parts of Orchard Heights Park is how quickly it transitions from a neighborhood park into a peaceful natural setting.

A small creek flows gently beside the children's playground and walking path, creating a relaxing atmosphere.

A charming little bridge crosses the creek and leads visitors into the wooded trails.

Almost immediately, the trees form a beautiful natural canopy overhead, providing cool shade even on warm summer mornings. Walking beneath the towering trees felt peaceful and refreshing.

Although the trail is relatively short—about 0.9 miles—it offers a wonderful opportunity for a relaxed walk surrounded by nature.

Nature's Free Summer Treats

One of the unexpected highlights of our walk was discovering that Orchard Heights Park offers free seasonal treats from nature.

Along parts of the trail, we found wild blackberry bushes filled with ripe berries. Nearby, there were also plum trees with fruit ready to be picked.

Stopping to enjoy a few fresh blackberries and plums made the walk even more memorable. For children and adults alike, it's a wonderful reminder that nature can engage all of our senses—not just through what we see and hear, but also through taste.

As always, we encourage visitors to pick responsibly, leave plenty for wildlife and other park visitors, and only eat fruit that you can confidently identify as safe.

These seasonal fruits are a delightful bonus that makes Orchard Heights Park an even more enjoyable destination for families during the summer months.

A Hidden Open Meadow

After walking through the shaded forest, the trail opens into a wide grassy field that serves as a dog park.

The sudden transition from enclosed woodland to open meadow was a pleasant surprise.

Dogs happily played while their owners enjoyed the beautiful morning, adding even more life and energy to the park.

New Birds for Our Bird Walk Series

Although Orchard Heights Park is smaller than some of the parks we've explored this season, it rewarded us with some exciting bird sightings.

The highlight of the morning was observing two bird species we had not encountered during our previous community bird walks.

Highlights included:

  • Steller's Jay

  • Evening Grosbeak

Seeing these beautiful birds made the visit especially memorable.

In addition, we observed several familiar species, including various:

  • Finches

  • Sparrows

Every park has its own unique bird community, and that's one of the reasons we enjoy exploring different locations throughout the Salem area.

Every Park Has Its Own Personality

One thing we've learned through these bird walks is that no two parks are alike.

Some parks offer river views and soaring eagles.

Others are known for wetlands and herons.

Orchard Heights Park offered something different—a peaceful forest walk, a gentle creek, unique woodland birds, and a quiet atmosphere perfect for a short family adventure.

Not every nature walk needs to be long to be meaningful.

Sometimes a simple hour outdoors is enough to refresh the mind and reconnect with nature.

More Than Bird Watching

These community bird walks continue to be about much more than birds.

Each outing gives us an opportunity to:

  • Spend quality time together as a family.

  • Explore parks throughout Salem and the surrounding communities.

  • Encourage children to become curious about nature.

  • Learn to identify local birds.

  • Appreciate the changing seasons.

  • Improve our physical and mental well-being through walking outdoors.

For Abhay, every walk becomes another outdoor classroom filled with new discoveries and questions. Watching children become excited about nature is one of the most rewarding parts of these adventures.

Looking Forward

Our fifth bird walk reminded us that you don't have to travel far to discover something new.

Even a neighborhood park can become an exciting destination when you slow down, observe carefully, and stay curious.

We look forward to continuing our Salem India Community Wellness Bird Walk series as we explore more parks, discover more birds, and encourage more families to experience the incredible natural beauty that surrounds us.
