Finding Belonging in Salem, Oregon: Building a Community Where Everyone Matters

What Does It Mean to Belong?

Imagine moving to a new city where you have a home, a job, and everything you need for daily life—but very few people you can call friends.

You may be surrounded by people yet still feel disconnected.

Now imagine someone welcoming you to a community gathering, introducing you to other families, and inviting you to participate in an activity. Over time, unfamiliar faces become friends, and a new city begins to feel like home.

That is the power of belonging.

Belonging means feeling accepted, respected, valued, and connected. It is knowing that your presence matters and that you have something meaningful to contribute.

Why Belonging Matters for Our Well-Being

Human beings thrive through meaningful relationships.

Research has consistently linked strong social connections with better physical and mental health, while loneliness and social isolation are associated with increased health risks.

For Indian families living in Salem, Oregon, building meaningful relationships can be particularly important.

Many families have moved away from their extended families, childhood friendships, and familiar cultural environments. Between demanding careers, raising children, and managing everyday responsibilities, finding time to develop friendships can be challenging.

Children also benefit from opportunities to understand their cultural heritage while developing friendships with people from diverse backgrounds.

A healthy community supports both our cultural identity and our connection to the place we call home.

Building Belonging Through Small Actions

Creating a welcoming community does not necessarily require large celebrations or expensive events.

Sometimes, meaningful connections begin with simple actions:

  • Welcoming a new family to Salem.

  • Sharing a meal or attending a community potluck.

  • Introducing children to other families.

  • Offering assistance to someone experiencing difficulties.

  • Sharing knowledge, skills, and experiences.

  • Volunteering for a community activity.

  • Including someone who might otherwise feel left out.

When these actions become part of everyday community life, relationships grow stronger.

Importantly, belonging is not only about receiving support. It is also about having opportunities to contribute.

Everyone has something valuable to offer.

Our Vision: Salem India Wellness Community

Through HWY Foundation, Salem India Wellness Community is working toward creating a welcoming environment where individuals and families can connect, learn, contribute, and grow together.

Our vision extends beyond organizing social gatherings.

We hope to encourage meaningful relationships through educational activities, wellness initiatives, cultural understanding, volunteer opportunities, and family-centered events.

Our monthly community gatherings, which we envision as Sammelans, will provide opportunities for families to meet regularly, share experiences, participate in educational discussions, and strengthen friendships.

We believe these regular interactions can gradually transform acquaintances into meaningful relationships.

Our approach is rooted in a simple philosophy:

Connect. Contribute. Belong.

Connecting With the Larger Salem Community

While Salem India Wellness Community celebrates Indian cultural heritage, our vision extends beyond any single cultural group.

We recognize the valuable contributions of existing community organizations and hope to complement their efforts through collaboration rather than competition.

We want Indian families to feel connected not only with one another but also with the broader Salem community.

This includes learning about local resources, participating in community service, supporting neighborhood initiatives, and building friendships across cultural backgrounds.

Preserving our heritage and embracing our local community are not competing goals. They can strengthen one another.

Everyone Has a Role in Building Community

A successful community is not defined simply by the number of people attending events.

Its true strength comes from the relationships people develop, the support they offer one another, and the sense of responsibility they share.

You do not need to hold a leadership position, make a financial contribution, or organize a major event to make a difference.

Sometimes, all it takes is introducing yourself, inviting someone to join a conversation, or offering a helping hand.

At HWY Foundation and Salem India Wellness Community, we believe everyone deserves to feel welcomed, respected, and connected.

Our goal is not simply to bring people together. It is to create an environment where people genuinely feel they belong.

Together, we can help make Salem a place where every family feels at home.

Join us at an upcoming Salem India Wellness Community Event. Come as you are, bring your family, share your experiences, and discover how small connections can create a stronger community.
