Eagles, Blackberries & an Unexpected Ostrich at Keizer Rapids Park

Salem India Community Wellness Bird Walk #4

Date: August 1st 2026
Location: Keizer Rapids Park, Keizer, Oregon

Nature has a wonderful way of surprising us, and our fourth Salem India Community Wellness Bird Walk was proof of that. Every bird walk is different. Some days we discover many new bird species, while other days we discover new places, learn something unexpected, and create lasting memories together.

This time, our family—Raj, Sindhu, and Abhay—visited Keizer Rapids Park to explore another beautiful park in the Salem area. While we didn't identify as many new bird species as on previous walks, the experience reminded us that bird watching is about much more than adding birds to a checklist.

It is about slowing down, observing nature, spending quality time together, and appreciating the world around us.

An Unexpected Welcome – Meeting an Ostrich!

Before we even began our walk, we were greeted by something completely unexpected.

Right next to the parking lot, on a large neighboring property, stood a magnificent ostrich.

Although not a wild bird, it immediately captured our attention. We learned that the property owner raises an ostrich, and seeing the world's largest living bird from just a short distance away was an exciting way to begin our adventure.

Abhay was fascinated by its incredible height and long neck, and all of us spent several minutes simply watching this amazing bird before heading into the park.

It was certainly not what we expected to see on a community bird walk, but it became one of the highlights of the morning.

Exploring a Hidden Gem

As we continued into Keizer Rapids Park, we realized how much more there was to discover than we had imagined.

Although many people know the park for its large playground and open spaces, we explored areas we had never visited before.

The beautiful amphitheater, nestled among towering trees, was especially impressive. Surrounded by peaceful woodland, it blended perfectly into the natural landscape and felt like a wonderful place for community gatherings and outdoor performances.

Walking through the shaded forest trails, we found ourselves appreciating not only the wildlife but also the incredible beauty of the park itself.

Sometimes the destination isn't the only attraction—the journey through nature is just as rewarding.

Birds of the Day

Even though we didn't add many new species to our growing bird list, we still enjoyed several wonderful sightings.

Some of the birds we observed included:

  • Red-breasted Nuthatch

  • Great Blue Heron

  • Bald Eagle

  • Several families of ducks along the river

Watching the Bald Eagles soaring high above the trees was especially memorable. Their graceful flight reminded us why they are such iconic symbols of North American wildlife.

Near the water, we watched a Great Blue Heron patiently searching for fish, demonstrating the remarkable patience that makes these birds such successful hunters.

Several duck families paddled peacefully along the river, creating another reminder that summer is a wonderful season for observing young birds learning to navigate their world.

A Pleasant Surprise Along the Trail

One of the nicest moments of the morning came when we unexpectedly met Meenal, who happened to be walking her dog in the nearby dog park.

As always, our conversation quickly turned to nature.

We spent time chatting about:

  • The birds we had observed

  • Different areas of Keizer Rapids Park

  • Local wildlife

  • Future bird walks

  • The changing seasons

It is always enjoyable meeting people who share the same appreciation for nature. Conversations like these make every community bird walk even more meaningful.

Sweet Rewards from Nature

As we continued our walk, another pleasant surprise awaited us.

Wild blackberry bushes lined portions of the trail, filled with ripe berries ready to enjoy.

Stopping to pick a few fresh blackberries became one of the most enjoyable moments of the morning. Their sweet flavor was the perfect reminder that nature offers gifts beyond beautiful scenery and wildlife.

Simple experiences like sharing freshly picked berries with family make these walks even more memorable.

More Than Bird Watching

Each Salem India Community Wellness Bird Walk continues to become something much greater than simply identifying birds.

These outings give us opportunities to:

  • Spend meaningful time together as a family.

  • Encourage children to explore and stay curious.

  • Discover beautiful parks throughout the Salem and Keizer area.

  • Appreciate local wildlife and natural habitats.

  • Meet friends who share a love for nature.

  • Improve our physical and mental well-being through walking outdoors.

Every walk teaches us that nature has something new to offer, whether it's a rare bird, a beautiful flower, a peaceful conversation, or an unexpected surprise waiting near the parking lot.

Looking Ahead

Although this bird walk added only a few new species to our growing list, it gave us something even more valuable—a deeper appreciation for one of our local parks and another wonderful family memory.

From our unexpected encounter with the ostrich to watching Bald Eagles soar overhead, discovering the peaceful amphitheater, enjoying fresh wild blackberries, and catching up with Meenal, every part of the morning reminded us why we continue organizing these community wellness bird walks.

Nature doesn't always reward us with rare sightings, but it always rewards us with moments worth remembering.

We look forward to exploring another park soon and hope more families from our community will join us on future bird walks.
